DarLing: a Lexical database of Dargwa

DarLing is a lexical database containing the lexicona of several Dargwa languages and dialects. The search in the database is possible by different types of queriesː by a Dargwa word, by Russian or English translation in one or several languages. Synonyms, cognates (words of the same origin) and words containing certain morphemes are also available.

Word forms of Dargwa are presented in Cyrillic alphabet (based on the orthography of Literary dargwa) and in transcription. Lexicon entries contain grammatical information (different forms of words, case frames of verbs, nominal gender, etc.). For all words, the database provides information about the source of the data.

The first version of the lexical database was created in 2018. In 2022, the database was reorganized. Currently, the database contains more than 2000 comparative series, including more than 300 verb roots. The data in the database come from two principal sources: published dictionaries and grammars (including online resources) and field materials collected by the authors and their colleagues. In the database, all data are presented in a standard format, with words from different languages and dialects organized into comparative series.

Currently, the database contains lexicons of the following languages and dialects: Aqusha, Itsari, Kadar, Mehweb Muira, Qunqi and Tanti. The database is gradually being enriched with new data. In particular, we are preparing lexicons of Urakhi and Kubachi, as well as data from the "Dialectological Dictionary of Dargwa" by S. M. Temirbulatova (2022).
